Point #5: Response by Paul Melters to Steve Slott, DDS - September 5, 2013

To Steve Slott:

SLOTT: #5 Laughable? Without question.

As I said, you have no evidence that fluoride ions DO reform in the gut into HF at the miniscule concentrations of water fluoridation, and certainly no evidence of adverse effects even if they do.

"Absorption of fluoride from the stomach is inversely proportional to pH (Messer and Ophaug 1993; Whitford and Pashley 1984), suggesting that fluoride is absorbed from the stomach as hydrogen fluoride rather than the fluoride ion (Whitford and Pashley 1984)."

Note the operative word "SUGGESTING".

"The currently accepted theory on fluoride absorption is that inorganic fluoride in the form of the undissociated molecule, hydrofluoric acid (HF) is absorbed by rapid, passive diffusion along the entire gastrointestinal tract..."

(Whitford and Pashley 1984).

Adverse effects of excess fluoride.

The toxic effects of high fluoride intake are due to the fact that it is a direct cellular poison, which binds calcium and interferes with the activity of proteolytic and glycolytic enzymes. Ingested fluoride reacts with gastric acid to produce hydrofluoric acid in the stomach. Thus, acute exposure to high concentrations of fluoride results in immediate effects: abdominal pain, excessive saliva, nausea and vomiting. Seizures and muscle spasms may also occur. Death due to respiratory paralysis is a possibility.

The acute effects of inhalation of hydrogen fluoride are severe irritation of the respiratory tract, with coughing, choking and pulmonary oedema. Severe burns or prolonged visual defects may result from skin or eye contact. Inhalation or dermal.

None of this is of any relevance to water fluoridated at 0.7 ppm.

Steve Slott, how can I possibly take you seriously anymore? You don’t even understand the most basic aspects of fluoride metabolism. You simply cite stuff without any understanding on the matter. In the process you’re making such a fool out of yourself - without even realizing it, apparently. I showed your response to some professional toxicologists yesterday, and everyone started laughing.

Re: Your comment: Note the operative word "THEORY"

To make it easier - perhaps read the following from the 1991 Report which has been cited to you on many occasions previously:

“Since soluble ionic fluorides dissociate to release free F- in solution and protonate to form HF in the acid milieu of the gastrointestinal act, all should be absorbed readily in the stomach, since this is the most acidic portion of the gastrointestinal tract. As previously indicated, this accepted theory has been demonstrated in a number of human and animal studies.” (Review of Fluoride Benefits and Risks, Department of Health and Human Services, February 1991 p.3)

While there are many other issues to consider, such as the formation of aluminofluoride complexes [AlF(x)], your ignorance on these fundamental “free fluoride” aspects is mind-boggling.

I would like to suggest the following textbook to you, if I may:

And - please stop with this nonsense of “relevance to water fluoridated at 0.7 ppm”.

You should really know by now that it is TOTAL fluoride intake and duration thereof that determines fluoride toxicity.
